A.S.W – Friday

Today - Friday - was the last day of Active Schools Week and what a way to finish off!! Today saw the final leg of or Active Week 10k. Over half of our students completed the week long challenge as well as partaking in all our other activities. A great number of other people from our school community also completed the challenge including teacher, school staff, parents, family and friends! Well done to everyone who took up the challenge!

Our 6th class students were very fortunate to receive a visit from the Irish Wheelchair Association. Our coach for the day, Robbie, also brought some sports chairs so the boys (and teachers)  could experience wheelchair basketball!! All who took part were amazed at the level of skill and fitness needed to play this game and showed that a disability is no barrier in becoming an elite athlete! A hugh thank you to Robbie and the Irish Wheelchair Association for providing us with this fantastic, and enlightening, experience!

We  would like to say a huge thank you to all those who contributed to making our very first Active Schools Week a great success! A special thank you goes to Boyne Rovers F.C for allowing us the use of their pitch all week and to all the coaches who gave up their time to help our boys experience some amazing new sports and activities!

Go raibh míle maith agaibh!!

A.S.W – Thursday

It was a busy day in St. Josephs as the fourth day of our Active Week got under way. Straight off, the boys from 3rd and 4th went toe to toe with the Boxing Coaches from Treadagh Boxing Club. The boys bobbed and weaved, hooked and jabbed and learned all about the 'Noble Art'. A big thank you to Padraig and the coaches from Treadagh Boxing Club for giving their time and effort today!!

Elsewhere the big competition of the Active Week got under way, The Active Week Rounders Championship! All areas of our school community was represented with two teams from sixth class, a parents team and a teachers team all taking part. In the two semi finals the Red Team from 6th class easily saw off the parents team while in the other semi final the teachers came out with a narrow victory over the Blue Team from sixth class. A very close final was played out with the Teachers finally coming out on top after a spectacular catch from Ms. Kennedy to seal a one run victory!

Congratulations to Arnas Simkus from R9 who won the 'Bling Your Bike' Competition. Arnas really added some attitude to his wheels!! Well Done!!

A.S.W – Wednesday

Today our 5th classes were lucky enough to receive some expert coaching in table tennis from our very own ping pong master, Steven Dunne. Steven has played table tennis at an extremely high level and has been involved in coaching for many years (as well as keeping our school looking great and running smoothly!) The boys from 5th got some great tips and, who knows, we may even have unearthed a new Long Ma or Timo Boll!

Our Active Week 10k continues and the boys are getting more and more enthusiastic as the week goes on. Keep going lads, over half way there!!

A.S.W – Tuesday

Today we continued our Active Station teaching with Mr. Hughes and the Active Schools Committee. This time it was a chance for 3rd and 4th class to try their hand at a range of sports. The Active Stations were a huge success and were enjoyed by all classes in the school. A massive thank you goes to Mr. Hughes, the Active Schools Committee and our Parent helpers for planning and running the stations and also for bringing so much fun and enthusiasm to Active Week. Thanks Guys!!!

Today also saw  classes partaking in traditional yard games such as 'Leavo', 'Tip the Can' and 'What Time is it Mr. Wolf?'. The boys who took part really enjoyed these games and some have continued to play them all week!

A.S.W – Monday

Today we kicked off Active Schools Week with The Active Schools Committee and Mr. Hughes running 'Active Stations'. The boys in fifth and sixth were given the opportunity to improve their skills at a number of different activities ranging from rugby to hockey.

The starters pistol also went off for our Active Schools 10k. Each lunch time all pupils will be given the opportunity to run a part of the overall 10km. The turn out for the first leg of the run was amazing with the vast majority of boys taking part. Keep up the great work lads, and we'll see you at the finish line on Friday!!
